What You Need To Know About Installing A New Stereo In Your Vehicle

Posted on

The car stereo in your car or truck may be a simple factory stereo without many features, but in most cars, you can replace the stereo system to upgrade your stereo. There are a wide variety of options that are available from aftermarket stereo manufacturers. Still, there are some things you will need to consider when choosing one for your car or truck.

Choosing Your Options

If there is a specific option that you want in your stereo system, an excellent place to start is to visit a car stereo store so that you can look at the available stereos that will work in your car. The salesperson at the store will help you choose a system that is right for your needs and many stores offer installation, so you don't have to try and do the work yourself.

There are some car stereos that will accept add-ons like a disc changer, amplifier, and even Bluetooth connectivity to allow your phone or other mobile devices to connect to the unit. In some models, satellite or GPS is also part of the system, so take some time to look at all the options before choosing the stereo for your car.

Car Stereo Installation

The chassis on most car stereos will be a standard size, so you may also need an installation kit that is specific to your car and will ensure that the stereo fits without altering the dashboard or console of your vehicle. The salesperson in the store can also help select the right kit for your car so that the installing is clean and looks like the new stereo came in the car.

Once you have selected the car stereo and other parts you need for your new system, the installation technician can carefully pull the old stereo out of your vehicle and put the new one in, connecting it to your existing speakers or installing new speakers for you if you need them.

If your speakers do not have enough power rating for the system you are installing, the technician or the salesperson can help you select replacements that are rated for the output of the new stereo and will fit in the stock speaker locations, so the car retains the factory look and feel.

If you want to have additional speakers installed in the car or add an amplifier to the system, they may have to be mounted in the trunk or under the vehicle's seat if you want to hide them. Let the installer know if there are unique customizations or things you want in the system so they can be done during the installation process.
